Signs requiring urgent assessment
Sudden pain or swelling in one leg, warmth or colour change may indicate a clot. Do not wait for a routine appointment. Breathlessness, chest pain or fainting requires emergency help.
Diagnosis and treatment
Diagnosis combines clinical assessment and tests such as venous ultrasound. Anticoagulants commonly prevent clot extension; the clinician determines type and duration. Selected cases may benefit from catheter-directed clot removal or thrombolysis.
Follow-up and complex veins
Symptoms, bleeding risk and medicines need review. Chronic obstruction may require further imaging, including IVUS in selected cases, and discussion of stenting when indicated. Do not change anticoagulants yourself.
This is general information. Investigations and treatment require individual assessment. Do not wait for a routine booking if symptoms are sudden or severe.
